Last May(2023. 5. 26 - 29), Students from Shibaura Institute of Technology visited our department to co-host and participate in the 2023 KMU-SIT Summer Workshop. Especially, on the first day of the event students from the both institutions teamed up to introduce their culture to each other. 35 participants from KMU (2 advisors) and 31 participants from SIT (1 advisor) formed 15 teams and worked together during the workshop. In the morning, as part of the 'User Experience Design' class, a second-year major class in the Industrial Design Department at Kookmin University, Shibaura students and Kookmin students teamed up to role-play a scenario in which AI systems were actively used in the home. The event was held in Room 315 on the 3rd floor of Kookmin University's Architecture Building. The teams were randomly assigned and had a few minutes to introduce themselves and get to know each other before the role-playing began. Each team chose one of the various housing types and then freely wrote scenarios and distributed roles. Students improvised their ideas accordingly to develop various design insights by discovering the expectations, discomforts, and points of attention or consideration that arise when AI enters the home. “I thought it would be similar because Japan also has a tea-drinking culture, but it seems that Japan is more formal and formalized than Korea. It was very interesting to learn about different cultures that seem to be the same.” - Kookmin University student who experienced the tea ceremony. After visiting the Myeongwon Folk Museum, students selected an exhibition that was held in the city and introduced the Japanese students to Korean culture. The Korean students chose to visit the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Craft Museum, and Hanji Culture, and Industry Center, and many of the Japanese students admired the unique beauty of Korean artworks and culture. In addition to the exhibition space, the students also visited places where they could feel and experience Korean culture, such as craft streets, Insadong Street, and Bukchon Hanok Village, where they were able to exchange with Japanese students about each other's culture, perspectives on artworks, values, and attitudes toward viewing and experiencing exhibitions. The Korean students were able to touch the Hanji and share their thoughts while viewing the artworks, while the Japanese students, on the other hand, mainly watched the artworks with their eyes and investigated the artworks personally rather than touching them. It was very interesting to see the differences, even in such small details. Finally, the workshop concluded with a dinner for all the students together. It was a short day, but it felt like it was just enough time to get to know each other, and many of them looked forward to meeting again in the winter at SIT-KMU Design Workshop. The KMU-SIT Summer Workshop provided an opportunity for creative idea-sharing between students from Korea and Japan and an experience of exchange and collaboration across cultural boundaries. By experiencing the beauty of Korean traditional culture and design, we were able to get closer to learning and understanding each other's cultures and develop the ability to design a better future with the power of design and culture.

At the College Student Design Conference (DSUS) of the Autumn Academic Conference of the Korean Design Association held on November 13, 2021, "Pingpongdang: Mobile Application to Help Self-Management of Diabetes Patients" presented by Lee Ji-young, Kim Ji-hyun, and Shin Min-sun of the Department of Industrial Design won the Excellence Award. Pingpongdang, one of the Pink Form works before graduation this year, was developed based on surveys and interviews of diabetic patients, allowing them to keep up with records of blood sugar/wet, which were cumbersome homework, and presents solutions to share psychological support in communities overcoming diabetes. Pingpongdang, named by combining blood sugar levels that do not know where to bounce like ping pong balls with "sugar" of diabetes, was completed through repeated UT for diabetic patients. Student Lee Ji-young, who verbally presented at the conference, said through her thesis and presentation at the conference, "It was an opportunity to think about how to logically describe the design process of the project, and it was an experience to persuade her design by presenting it." In addition to the Pingpongdang team, a total of 62 articles were submitted and 57 articles were published (shoe: 28, poster: 29), "Popa Bubble: Interactive Campaign Design Proposal" published by students Son Jung-im, Park Soo-jin, Kim Ye-jin, and Kim Ji-soo won the Encouragement Award. As a result, the Department of Industrial Design has been continuing its record of winning excellence awards (including the best awards) at four consecutive college student design academic competitions since the spring 2020 competition.

Kookmin University industrial design students (team name: Woori Yard) won the Social Problem Solving Award in the name of the Seoul Metropolitan Government Mayor at the 2021 [Human City Design University Workshop Forum] held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul on December 3 (Fri) has been awarded. The Human City Design University Student Workshop is a workshop hosted by Seoul Metropolitan Government and co-hosted by the Seoul Design Foundation and the Korea Design Society. A total of 31 teams (26 domestic and 5 overseas) were selected for this workshop, which was supported from all over the world, and the workshops were held for a total of 3 months from July to October. All teams presented their workshop results at the 2021 Korean Design Society held in November. The "Wooritteul" team, consisting of five students (Kim Yun-ho, Kim Tae-hyuk, Min Joon-young, Ryu Hae-chan, Jeong Hae-chan, and advisor: Kwon Hyo-sun), paid attention to abandoned small spaces due to dark and low utilization like underground roads and overpasses that exist throughout the city. It proposed a design of public facilities that applied smart farm technology suitable for the cultivation and harvest of small crops such as salads in such a small space and showed a scenario of providing citizens with a small garden in the city center. In particular, in order to produce a life-size model and show the usage scenario, it was installed directly under the overpass to conduct interviews with citizens and verify its feasibility. The Wooritteul team achieved encouraging results in winning the Seoul Special Mayor Award, which is given to two of the 31 teams. Professor Kwon Hyosun said, "Students have defined very novel design issues on their own and completed all design processes, including research and discussion, design proposals, production, and verification, with great teamwork. I think this is the result of constant research and trial and error for students to find a better solution," she said.

Students of Kookmin University's Department of Industrial Design (team name: Speed of Seoul) won the Seoul Mayor's Award at the 2021 <Seoul Silver Art Museum> University Collaboration Public Art Project Performance Sharing Meeting held on November 19 (Fri) at the Seosomun Complex of Seoul City Hall. The University Collaboration Public Art Project is a field-oriented public art project that induces artistic change in the city and region by injecting creative ideas led by university students into the city. In 2021, 6 teams from 5 universities were finally selected and awarded through a free theme contest. It was exhibited in the square and on Deoksugung-gil. A total of 20 students participated in the THE PACE OF SEOUL team (supervisor Nam Won-seok) of the Department of Industrial Design, and the project "Street to Walk, Speed of Seoul" expressed the citizens living in Seoul at their own speed and speed and movement. The speed to be dealt with in this project is largely two, one is the speed of people traveling to and from Sejong-daero, and the other is the speed that flows differently in various aspects of Seoul. To capture these two speeds, a kinetic art wall was planned that applied the moire phenomenon so that the movement of the walking person and the movement of the art wall interfere with each other. Muare is also called an interference pattern, and is a phenomenon that shows visual changes according to light interference when regularly repeated shapes overlap. Through this, an expression that can interfere with each other while contrasting static and dynamic elements was devised, and designed in a structure suitable for public exhibitions. Artwall, which expresses the appearance of various speeds existing in Seoul, consists of two layers of screens, and is conceived as a unique expression in which movements are repeated in several images by rotating the outer screen with grid patterns printed on it with a motor. The supervisor said, "I hope it will be a good opportunity for communication between classmates who can be neglected due to COVID-19, so I recruited and applied for a team that all grades participate in, and it will be an opportunity for students to experience the characteristics of their majors and their own ways of thinking can be applied to various objects."
